Homemade Citrus Body Scrub

Homemade Citrus Body Scrub

Making homemade beauty products is much simpler than you might think. It feels very rewarding to make your own and it will help you avoid all the nasty ingredients that are included in many store bought products.

While there is a growing range of ethical natural beauty brands popping up every day which is wonderful to give consumers choice, they can often be very costly to purchase. Making your own products is very cheap and they turn out so beautifully you can even make some to gift to friends and family.

Winter is always a time when I need to pay my skin much more attention. Central heating and the cold air can make your skin very dry and flaky and using a body scrub is great way to remove dead skin leaving you feeling smooth and silky.

The recipe I am sharing with you today only requires four simple ingredients that you might already have at home. When I first started making my own products at home I couldn’t believe how easy it was. This scrub is so simple to make and smells absolutely delicious. It feels like such a luxury to use and seeing as it is cheap to make you can use it more frequently.

All you need is coconut oil, sugar, essential oil and citrus fruit. Coconut oil is moisturising and very nourishing for your skin. The sugar is a great exfoliant helping to remove all the dry skin on your body. The citrus and essential oil gives it a fresh smell. That’s it, nothing else is required and you can rest easy knowing that you are not slathering toxins all over your body.

Skin is the largest organ in the body and everything you put on your body is absorbed into the blood stream so it is extremely important to only be using natural products.

This scrub is great to use on your legs and arms where dry skin is common and requires a little more exfoliation for the skin to become smooth. It works like any other exfoliant, you just need a small amount which you rub on in a circular motion and then shower and rinse once you have finished. Your skin will feel smooth and refreshed. Exfoliating the skin helps to bring all the blood to the surface and is invigorating for the body.

There are many different variations you could use for this recipe. I used orange but you cold also use lemon or lime and another one of my favourites is lavender and vanilla.

If you’ve never made your own beauty products, there is honestly no reason to feel intimidated, you can’t mess it up and you’ll be so thankful to have such a beautiful product to use on your body.

Ingredients

½ cup coconut oil

1 cup natural cane sugar

5-10 drops essential oil (lemon, lime or orange would work well)

1 orange, zest removed

Directions

1. Add the coconut oil to a glass jar. If you live in a cold climate and the oil is hard you will need to pour a small amount of boiling water into a separate bowl and place the glass jar with coconut oil in the bowl until the oil softens. It doesn’t need to melt completely.

2. Once the coconut oil has melted, add the sugar and mix well until the oil and sugar are well combined.

3. Add the essential oil and zest of the orange and mix well.

4. Screw the lid on the jar to store and it’s ready to use.
